A fitness expert reveals seven popular summer drinks that you may not know are harmful to your health

Fitness experts have revealed seven popular summer drinks that you may not realize are unhealthy – from smoothies to lemonade.

As temperatures rise, it’s natural to crave an ice-cold drink – but unfortunately, many refreshing liquids are packed to the brim with harmful preservatives and harmful sugar.

Luckily, UK personal trainer Donna Callander teamed up with experts at Live Football Tickets to create a list of the worst drinks for you – so you can be sure to consume them in moderation.

“Your body is made mostly of water, so staying hydrated is essential, especially with the increased sweating that happens in the summer,” Donna told the publication.

“While everything is fine in moderation or as an occasional treat, it’s important to be mindful of the hidden calories, sugar and salt in what you consume.”

First on their list of drinks to avoid were energy drinks, with the outlet explaining that while they may give you a “quick buzz,” they can ultimately “lead to dehydration and leave you groggy and thirsty on a scorching day.”

“Their sweet taste makes it easy to overeat, causing problems such as abnormal heartbeats, seizures and mood swings,” Live Football Tickets added.

Next up were sweet cocktails like margaritas and daiquiris.

“They can be deceptively refreshing, but are often loaded with sugar,” the site says.

Experts at Live Football Tickets pointed out that just one margarita can be more than 70 per cent of your ‘daily sugar intake’.

“Remember that every alcoholic drink you consume can cause your body to lose up to four times more fluid,” the publication continued.

“Make it a habit to drink a glass of water before each cocktail or in between alcoholic drinks – this will not only help moderate your intake, but will also keep you hydrated this summer.”

Another drink they said is bad for your health is bubble tea – which is filled with ‘artificial flavours, colors and preservatives.’

Seven drinks that are bad for your health, according to experts

  • Energy drinks
  • Sweet cocktails
  • Bubble tea
  • Lemonade
  • Iced coffee and frappuccino
  • Smoothies
  • Soda

The experts pointed out that the drink “increases the calorie count” and is “low in nutritional value”.

“The tapioca pearls, while fun to chew, can also cause gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, gas and constipation,” the site warned.

Live football tickets were also advised to drink too much lemonade – despite the drink being a summertime favourite.

“This combination of sugar and acidity not only causes unwelcome spikes in blood sugar, but it can also be hard on your teeth and create a breeding ground for bacteria that erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities,” she said.

“Since large amounts of sugar are often needed to balance the acidity of the lemons, lemonade ends up being more of a sugary treat than a health boost.”

Additionally, the outlet described its frozen coffee and frappuccinos as “subtle sugar bombs” that are “laden with whipped cream, syrup and full fat.”

“Consuming too much of these can contribute to weight gain and related health problems such as obesity and type 2 diabetes,” she added.

Also on the list were smoothies, which despite their “healthy appearance” are full of sugar that is “quickly absorbed into the bloodstream”.

“While smoothies can contain a variety of fruits, vegetables and nutritious ingredients, overconsumption can harm your intended health goals,” Live Football Tickets wrote.

“Unlike whole fruit, which is high in fiber and slower to digest, mixed fruit breaks down its cell walls and releases its natural sugars as free sugars that are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to a rapid rise in blood sugar.”

Last but not least on the list was soda, with the experts pointing out that soft drinks tend to “dehydrate you” thanks to their “high sugar and caffeine content.”

“Unsweetened sugar forces the kidneys to work harder to process it, leading to increased urination and subsequent fluid loss,” the website added.
